The Purple Heart Monument was unveiled in November 2006 in San Antonio, Texas and currently has over 300 pavers already encircling the monument.
The top reads "Dedicated to all men and women wounded in all our wars."
On the left front is a large replica of the medal in gold. In the center is a profile bust of George Washington, who created the medal, then known as the Badge of Military Merit, on Aug. 7, 1782, in Newburgh, N.Y. On the monument's right front is this poem: "My stone is red for the blood they shed. The medal I bear is my country's way to show they care. If I could be seen by all mankind, maybe peace will come.
The Bexar County Commissioners has approved an additional 100 pavers to be added to the Purple Heart Monument.The public will get another chance to donate pavers to be placed around the Purple Heart Monument located downtown on the Bexar County Courthouse grounds. The pavers will display the Purple Heart recipient’s name, war/conflict and branch of service. A public unveiling ceremony will honor the new pavers. The date will be announced.
A minimum of $50 donation will cover the cost, engraving, and installation of the pavers and allows Alamo Chapter 1836 to continue its efforts in supporting the Purple Heart veterans in the local area. Checks should be made out to: MOPH 1836 and sent to: 5314 Pine View Dr, San Antonio, TX 782474626. Be sure to enclose a copy of the DD 214, name of Purple Heart veteran, what war/conflict he/she was wounded and branch of service.
